Nuclear Medicine – Overview

In nuclear medicine, radioactive material (radiopharmaceuticals) are used for diagnostics and therapy. As part thereof, it is required to measure the activity of the used radiopharmaceutical in different phases:

• for dosage of the radiopharmaceutical, i.e. before application to the patient. Measurement in dose calibrator
• after application and accumulation in target organ, e.g. I-131 in thyroid.

Whilst working with open radionuclides, working places or employees can get contaminated. Contamination monitors are used in this case to detect contaminations and avoid their diversion.
